The Clark County District Attorney’s Office’s Internship Program provides interns with invaluable opportunities for practical prosecution experience. Please contact us at DARecruiting@ClarkCountyDA.com if you have questions about our Internship Program.
Courtroom Experience
Being in court is often one of the most exciting parts of the internship for our interns. Our interns are encouraged to attend and observe trials, hearings, and court calendars.
Law student interns with sufficient class credits will apply to practice in court under the "Student Practice Rule”, the Nevada State Bar’s Student Practice Certification. Each intern will have supervising attorneys from several different units in our office to allow the intern ample opportunities to appear in court. Previous interns have appeared in court on dozens of occasions during the course of their internships, arguing motions or other hearings, presenting misdemeanor trials, and conducting preliminary hearings. The courtroom experience that interns gain in their work with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office is invaluable, and is often the most rewarding and skill-building part of the internship.
Working Side by Side With Our Attorneys and Advocates
Our interns will assist Deputy District Attorneys in all phases of prosecution. This may include reviewing transcripts and reports, trial strategy discussions, assembling trial notebooks and exhibits, sorting and evaluating evidence, attending pretrial conferences with law enforcement officers and witnesses, and more. Many of our interns also aid and shadow our Victim Witness Advocates, working directly with victims and witnesses.
Research and Writing
Law student interns are assigned legal research and writing projects from our Criminal Appeals Unit and by Deputy District Attorneys in our office. Law student interns typically complete several substantive research and writing assignments during the course of the internship. Interns prepare motions, oppositions and responses to motions and appeals, and research memoranda as part of the research and writing component of the program.
Additional Opportunities
When available, the internship includes tours of related agencies. In the past, interns have toured prisons, jails, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Forensic Lab, the Clark County Coroner’s Office, and more.
Interns often attend office-wide continuing legal education courses or other training sessions or workshops.
What is the timing of your Summer Internship Program?
Our Summer Internship Program starts around June 1 each summer and most interns are with us through early August.
Is the internship paid or unpaid?
Our internships are unpaid positions. Interns often obtain outside funding through law school programs such as public interest fellowships or grants. Many also participate in the program as externs for class credit through their respective law schools.
Who Should Apply?
We accept interns who are undergraduate students, law students, and even post-grads. Some of our interns are in a “gap year” between undergrad and law school. Please inquire at DARecruiting@ClarkCountyDA.com if you are not sure if you are eligible to apply.
