UNLV Professor Ruben Garcia on Separation of Powers - Law Day 2018 Presentation No. 1

This talk is about Separation of Powers and how in the last several years we have seen the potential of the judiciary to curb executive overreach. We have also seen judicial nomination that require a great deal of vigilance by the Senate in their oversight role. Informing and engaging the public is crucial to preserving our judicial institutions and promoting justice for all people. The talk will focus on the role of the courts ideally as a robust and impartial institution. Our court system ensures that constitutional civil liberties such as justice, fairness, and equality are afforded to all individuals, regardless of a person's race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship, or disability status.

CSN Professor Sondra Cosgrove on Separation of Powers - Law Day 2018 Presentation No. 2

Just as species evolve, cultures, along with their social and governing institutions, also evolve to meet new demands. The separation of governing powers in our Constitution can, therefore, be seen as a response to our early national history and culture. We will discuss that history and culture and why our founders selected separating governing powers as an appropriate and needed response.

UNLV Law Professor Ian Bartrum on Miranda - Law Day 2016 Presentation No. 1

Professor Ian Bartrum is an Associate Professor of Law at the UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law. He teaches Constitutional Law, Constitutional Theory, and Law and Religion. Today Professor Bartrum will explore the idea of a 'constitutional canon,' or a group of texts so central to our tradition that they seem to make up part of the Constitution itself. Miranda is one of those texts, and this lecture will explore the case's history, its place in our constitutional culture, and its future in the Supreme Court.

Know Your Miranda Rights and Beyond" - Law Day 2016 Presentation No. 2

Amy Rose joined the ACLU of Nevada as its legal director in January 2015. She spends her days using the justice system to protect and defend the civil rights and liberties of all Nevadans. She previously spent several years practicing plaintiff’s employment law where she advocated on behalf of Nevada workers facing discrimination or harassment. Her presentation today "Know Your Miranda Rights and Beyond,” focuses on your Miranda rights both outside and inside of school, while touching base on other constitutional rights.
