Beat Feet, dedicated on May 12, 2023, is an interactive sound-producing sculpture featuring a unique design that encourages visitors to engage and play. The sculpture represents a leaping kangaroo rat and the tail of a rattlesnake. Both are indigenous to the area. The feet and tail of the kangaroo rat sculpture are open tubes that resonate to create different notes when the tube ends are slapped. There is room for several kids to play at once, creating an opportunity for kids to come together despite language and cultural differences. Slap tubes, or the more technical name plosive aerophones, are common musical instruments worldwide, often used for ensemble play. They are typically struck with a hand or with a rubber-soled sandal. The sculpture is also designed to be durable and weather resistant, ensuring it will be a fixture in the park for years.
