Earth Rise by Mark Brandvik is conceived in part as a gateway to Michael Heizer’s monumental land art, Double Negative, which sits high up on a mesa located 8 miles east of the Moapa Valley Community Center. On the property of the center is an informational sign about the famous land art and provides the coordinates 36.6169 N, 114.3446 W.

Mark’s work is a homage to Heizer’s groundbreaking piece. Through its captivating composition of steel forms, Earth Rise echoes the explosive forces of large-scale excavation and the dynamics of erosion. The sculpture pays tribute to the American spirit of discovery from the Space Age as well as drawing inspiration from the landforms and archaeology found in the nearby landscape.

The art piece is also a celebration of the Moapa Valley community for their invaluable contribution to Earth Rise’s creation. It sits on the property of the Moapa Valley Community Center, located on the main street in Overton, NV. Subtle glyphs etched into the weathered steel honor the Valley and its people, all of whom have been a gracious host to art enthusiasts from all around the world for over half a century.

A native of Las Vegas, Mark Brandvik holds a BFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Brandvik has garnered recognitions for his art and has received numerous grants, commissions, and residencies. His work has been showcased in many exhibitions across the United States, Canada, and Europe.

In addition to his art practice, Mark Brandvik has taught studio art since 1997 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the College of Southern Nevada.  

The artist lives and maintains a studio in downtown Las Vegas.
