For some time, one local student struggled with chronic absenteeism due to an undiagnosed medical condition that began in early childhood. Despite the family's best efforts, it wasn’t until recently that they received a clear diagnosis, giving them a better understanding of the challenges their child was facing. When the parent connected with our team, she shared her concerns and the history of health-related absences. Immediately, Ms. Howard provided resources to help the family understand their rights and begin the process of seeking legal protections within the school district. Although the initial request for a 504 Plan and accommodations was denied, our team, along with our partners at JFSA-CAES, Dr. Leslie, and Ms. Howard advocated tirelessly for this student. Dr. Leslie personally contacted school administrators to push for appropriate educational support. When progress stalled, the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada stepped in to ensure the family’s rights were upheld. Just three weeks after intake was completed, the student's 504 Plan was officially approved, granting access to the accommodations they had needed. This important step means the student can now attend school consistently and thrive academically. This story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when families, advocates, and community partners come together. Through persistence, collaboration, and a commitment to equity, we helped turn years of struggle into a path of opportunity and success.
