Commissioner Segerblom, NFL Green Hosting Tree Giveaway & Planting Project
Clark County Commission Chairman Tick Segerblom, NFL Green and community partners are hosting a neighborhood tree giveaway and beautification project at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21, at Caesar Chavez Park, 1450 Radwick Drive near north Hollywood Boulevard and East Owens Avenue.
About 50 local households will receive free trees as part of the event. Community partners also will be planting 12 trees in the park to increase shade and cooling and reduce the urban heat island effect.
“Southern Nevada is one of the fastest-warming areas of the country,” said Chairman Segerblom, whose commission District E includes Caesar Chavez Park. “Planting trees and providing more green space helps offset the urban heat island effect and brings shade, cooling and beauty to our community. We are happy to work with the NFL and other partners to bring this lasting gift to our east Las Vegas community.”
In addition to NFL Green, other partners include Clark County’s Parks and Recreation and Real Property Management departments, Nevada Plants, the Las Vegas Super Bowl LV III Host Committee, Verizon, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), the Las Vegas Raiders’ Raider Rusher and the Raiderettes.
Heat islands are urbanized areas that experience higher temperatures because buildings, roads and other structures absorb and re-emit the sun’s heat more than natural landscapes. The RTC developed an urban heat map to identify area neighborhoods most in need of trees and the cooling they provide. More information about the project is on the RTC’s website at http://tinyurl.com/mseysjcj.
NFL Green is the National Football League’s sustainability project, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of events and leave a “green” legacy in host communities. These efforts include food recovery and distribution, recycling and solid waste management and donation of event and building materials, and community greening events and the Super Kids-Super Sharing event, a community initiative to support local youth.
