Through January 2025, Monroe Avenue between Hollywood Boulevard and Morning Sun Way is scheduled to be temporarily closed for storm drain and roadwork occurring as part of the construction of the Jim McGaughey Detention Basin near Frenchman Mountain.  

The detention basin is near Owens Avenue and Los Feliz Boulevard just east of Mike O’Callaghan Middle School. Construction on the $23.7 million project began over the summer to help mitigate some flooding issues in the East Las Vegas Valley. Work is expected to be complete in the fall of 2025.

While the closure on Monroe Avenue is in place, motorists are advised to use Hollywood Boulevard and Morning Sun way for north-south travel, and Owens and Washington Avenue for east-west travel. Portions of Hollywood Boulevard will have two travel lanes open in the area until approximately mid-December. The project’s work hours are generally 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Due to the fluid nature of construction activity and traffic conditions, work schedules can change on short notice. Motorists should check Waze and other navigation apps for real-time information.
