Clark County Commemorates National Crime Victims' Rights Week with Community Resource Fair
The Clark County District Attorney's Office Victim Witness Assistance Center (VWAC) hosted a successful Community Resource Fair on Wednesday at the Pearson Community Center, connecting crime victims with vital support services and resources as part of National Crime Victims' Rights Week.
In 2024, VWAC provided critical support to more than 18,000 crime victims in Clark County, offering over 30,000 direct service contacts including crisis intervention, court accompaniment, and victim advocacy services.
The event brought together 25 governmental agencies and organizations to provide information about available services for crime victims and their families, including the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Nevada Attorney General's Office and Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.
“Our Victim Witness Assistance Center has been providing compassionate support to victims for over 45 years, and events like this help ensure that everyone knows about the resources available to them,” said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson. “Last year alone, our advocates provided over 12,000 hours of court accompaniment services.
VWAC staff were on hand to discuss their comprehensive support services, including court accompaniment, case status updates, crisis intervention, and assistance with victim impact statements. Created in 1976, VWAC employs approximately 25 full-time professionals, with the majority serving as specially trained advocates for children, elders, disabled persons, and violent crime victims.
On April 15, the Board of County Commissioners will present a proclamation recognizing VWAC's 45+ years of service to the community and declaring April 6-12, 2025, as Crime Victims' Rights Week in Clark County.
“This Community Resource Fair exemplifies this year's National Crime Victims' Rights Week theme of 'Kinship' by bringing together our entire community to support crime victims,” said Commissioner William McCurdy II. “With violent crime affecting one in every 50 Nevada residents last year, these support services are more crucial than ever.”
